Bowness to Waterhead
The first day is an exhilarating hike, offering spectacular views across the Lake District that were worthy of Wainwright’s praise.
Start the day by getting either a Lake’s Cruiser or the bus, from Ambleside to Bowness-on-Windermere. Footpaths through Windermere lead up on to Orrest Head. It is from here that you have a viewpoint of the whole lake and therefore most of the Windermere Way. The route leads you to the picturesque hamlet of Troutbeck before following an old Roman trail to Wansfell. Wansfell Pike is the high point of the walk at 484 metres and when the sumit is clear of mist, the views of the Lake District fells are beathtaking. The path then dscends steeply back to Ambleside.

Waterhead to Ferry House
The next day leaves Ambleside behind as it leaves the village and climbs steeply to a viewpoint from where you can look right out over the village and enjoy stunning views across the lake. The route is then a hike to the summit of Loughrigg from where the path descends once again to the lakeshore. The walking becomes more gentle as it follows narrow roads and footpaths to Ferry Nab taking in small hikes through woodland on the way. The ferry can be taken from here across to Bowness.

Ferry House to Lakeside
After crossing back to Ferry House the next morning, the route continues to work its way down the West side of the lake. Along this section the trail has a couple of delightful sections along the lakeshore, but also climbs up to High Dam through tranquil woodlands. Descending across fields to the picturesque village of Finsthwaite, the path soon arrives at Lakeside and the Steamer Pier. The return to Bowness on Windermere can be taken either by boat or bus from here.

Lakeside to Bowness Bay
The final day starts by returning to Lakeside to start the longest walk of the Windermere Way. This is a challenging day’s walking which includes a climb up to the summit of Gummers How offering extensive views along the lower half of the lake as well as a breathtaking vista of the lakeland fells. Bridleways and footpaths lead down to the charming Winster Valley before a hike to the final summit of Brantfell and the descent to Bowness Bay.

Makkelijk - Middelmatig
