Walked Hadrian’s Wall, taking in all the forts, turrets and milecastles that we could.
The most amazing site was Vindolanda, which is not actually on the wall, but a mile or so south. Glad that we gave a day to visit it.
We were constantly impressed by the work that the Romans must have done to buld this wall around AD122.
Spent nights in a mix of pubs and B&Bs, all geared to provide comfortable accommodartion for the walker.

Mickledore gave first class service, booking transport and accommodation, providing maps and useful information on places to eat shop and so forth.
Also helped with a late change when we had to modify our plans.

Holiday rating

We had an eight-day walking holiday (seven days walking with a rest day) booked through Mickledore in late September. All our accommodations were places we would happily stay again, and the bag transfer service worked seamlessly. The maps and guidebook provided, as well as the recommendation that we pre-book as many of our meals as possible, were all very helpful in ensuring that we had a great experience. We walked the full trail (Bowness to Newcastle) and thoroughly enjoyed the journey and meeting some lovely people along the way.

Booking through Mickledore was very easy, and their staff were very responsive and helpful as we prepared for our holiday. We are not from the UK, so knowing that our accommodations and bag transfer service had been thoroughly vetted was a great comfort to us, as was having a point of contact in case of any issues during our trip. We also appreciated that if we failed to show up at one of our accommodations, steps would be taken to make sure we were alright. We think that Mickledore was good value for the money, and we are very likely to book another walking holiday with them in the future!

Holiday rating

Self-guided walking for 8 days on the South West Coast path from Minehead to Westward Ho, about 90 miles. The weather was glorious, sunny but not too hot (which helped) and the coastal scenery was spectacular, undulating for the first few days, then flattening out.

Company rating

Essentially Mickeldore are an agent that organise accommodation and luggage plus an occaional taxi tranafer if you are staying away from the trail. They also supply the necessary route documentation. They are are very efficient in all these aspects and communicate well. Clearly one could organise this all oneself, but in practice this would be a nightmare where accommodation is in short supply and possibly not much cheaper (if at all).
